So last Tuesday was a special day for the some of the handplane SIG members, we made our own planes! Our moderator, Jack, had offered this to anyone who wanted to participate and he was going to lead the charge and provide adult supervision/talk us through the building our own planes.

Due to overwhelming response from the OWA membership, we had to split into two groups to do the build. Being a keener, I volunteered for the first group. The build took place at Glen Briggs’ shop (our usual SIG hangout).

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.ottawawoodworkers.ca/news/2012/1/18/meeting-report-11th-january-2012.html"><rss:title>Meeting Report 11th January 2012</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.ottawawoodworkers.ca/news/2012/1/18/meeting-report-11th-january-2012.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Meeting Report</dc:subject>
The first meeting of the New Year saw about 50 people come out, which included 3 new members.
Last week was a special meeting for the Handplane Special Interest Group (operating under the umbrella of the Ottawa Woodworkers Association). Turns out that Robin, in an assumed fit of insanity, actually entrusted one of the Lee Valley staffers who is also part of our group with a selection of planes from his own collection. Not only were we allowed to drool at these planes, the combined value of which is more than some people make in a year, Rob actually let us play with them!!!

Prior to arriving at our humble meeting, all of the plane irons received some loving attention from LV’s resident sharpening guru (among other skillsets), Brian. Brian respected blade geometry (grind angles and cambers) but boy did he hone them. Once Brian is done with an iron, forget shaving a patch of arm hair to test for sharp, you can actually split the hair lengthwise. All this to say that the playing field was level between all of the planes.

Ok, so what did we have to play with?

</rss:item><rss:item rdf:about="http://www.ottawawoodworkers.ca/news/2011/12/17/meeting-report-14th-december-2011.html"><rss:title>Meeting Report 14th December 2011</rss:title><rss:link>http://www.ottawawoodworkers.ca/news/2011/12/17/meeting-report-14th-december-2011.html</rss:link>

<dc:subject>Meeting Report</dc:subject>
Meeting notes courtesy of Ken.
