Once Karen finished with the announcements the topic of the evening, router table joinery, was started off by Ken. Ken gave a demonstration using his router table on how to make sliding dovetails that might be used for joining the aprons to the legs of a table, drawer slides or even making boxes or drawers.

Up next was a book review from Daniel on, not a book, but a DVD, The Joinery Challenge. Brian also did a book review on Woodworking with the Router by Bill Hylton.

A break was called with sales at the sale table, 50/50 tickets, and general chit chat taking place.

The evening then continued with Brian using Karen's router table and giving a demonstration on the miter lock router bit and Karen talking and showing an example of the drawer lock router bit.

Once all the questions on router table joinery finished Glen took us to The Louvre in Paris. More specifically, through photos, we saw some of the furniture from the Louvre as well as some of the other sites from his 8 day trip to Paris.

To finish off the evening Wayne showed off his sled to help in making a cupped or bowed board flat using a thickness planer.

Karen then got things going with the beginner's class on how a jointer works and why it's good to have one. With the basics out of the way, Alan took over and not only ran some wood over the jointer but also showed us some of the tricks he uses in a production shop as well as how to taper a leg using the machine.

During the break, people where able to take a close looks at the sale table and buy a few things, grab a drink, buy 50/50 tickets and take a close up look at the jointer featured in the second half of the evening.

After the break, Rick gave us a demonstration of Lee Valley's 2010 April fools video. If you haven't seen it yet, here it is, and Vic you have never looked better!

Matthias then talked about his shop made jointer. There where some engineering challenges to overcome to make his latest creation. If you would like to take a good look at it.

To wrap up the evening I showed my curved back bent lamination Birds eye Maple and butternut drawer and gave a brief description on how I did the bent lamination back. Henry showed his recently finished recipe box made using some very old exotic wood.

Thanks, Ken!

Even with the beautiful summer like weather (or maybe because) we had about 50 people out at the March meeting. Due to some technical difficulties, the meeting started a little late but once we got going, Jack was first up with an update on the last of the hand plane SIG. If there is enough interest, there may be another series next year or it may expand into a hand tools SIG. Let Jack know if you have an interest jcschwass@rogers.com.

Karen then introduced the topic for the evening "Finishing that can be done in a home work shop". First up was Denis with "Finish? What finish" a few years ago he made some chairs for his kids and didn't put any finish on them. They now have a nice finish and patina just from use.

Karen then introduced the book for the book review Bob Flexner's Understanding Wood Finishing. In fact Karen would pull out the book every chance she got through out the evening reading passages from the "wood finishing bible".

Brian gave some information on his finish, an oil varnish blend which prompted some discussion.

Henry talked about a shop made wax finish he came up with using Beeswax, Mineral oil, water and Borax. If you would like more information, drop him a line henryrussell@rogers.com.

Oliver talked about Waterlox. Hard to find and expensive but sounds like a good finish.

A question about finishing and staining pine resulted in a good group discussion.

To wrap up the evening, Karen discussed and demonstrated French Polishing. A lot of practice and work to do this kind of finish but the end result is a very deep looking and smooth shellac finish.
