Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 12:30PM Meeting Report 11th January 2012
Meeting report courtesy of Ken. Thanks, Ken!
The first meeting of the New Year saw about 50 people come out, which included 3 new members. Vic wished everyone a Happy New Year and then turned the floor over to Karen who reminded everyone that it is time to pay the yearly dues. To keep your membership in good standing, please break open the piggy bank and bring in your $35 for the next meeting. Karen also mentioned that starting next month we will try out a new segment at the monthly meetings: wood related home reno information. If you have a question to be answered, drop Karen a note at kmcsmart@gmail.com.
With that business taken care of, Denis gave a thorough overview on everything to do with hand saws from large to small, western to Japanese, along with benches and jigs and talked about tooth sizing. To go along with Denis, Terry showed and explained the Moxon vice.
Jack was up next to give an update on the ongoing hand plane SIG. Tuesday night, three people met as Glen's shop and under Jack's watchful eye, made a working wooden hand plane in three hours. If you are interested, the next session will be Jan. 24th. Get in touch with Jack at jcschwass@rogers.com
Sharon talked about the book How to Build Shaker Furniture by Thomas Moser for the book review.
During the break, along with the usual drinks, 50/50 tickets, people trying out the different hand saws and general chit chat, a number of things found new homes from the sale table. Also, many people picked up some older issues of FWW for free.
After the break, John Wilson talked and demonstrated the fine art of sharpening hand saws and all of the different things one has to think about while performing this task.
After John's presentation three of the four people who made hand planes on Tuesday evening showed them off. Matthias showed and explained his tilting router lift woodgears.ca/router_lift/index.html to end Show and Tell.
With all that and the clock reading 9:20, the January meeting came to a close.
See everyone next month.
